Annual Meeting Division Committees

1. Annual Scientific Meeting Abstract Reviewers

Abstract reviewers are typically responsible for grading 40 to 50 abstracts. Volunteers will be invited to review based on their selected area of expertise. It is critical that all reviewers have time available October 10 through 21 to review and grade their assigned abstracts. All scientific reviewers are required to disclose financial conflicts of interest.

Invited reviewers will be asked to participate for three consecutive years, if their schedule allows, and will receive complimentary registration to the annual meeting. Reviewers do not comprise an official SIR committee.

Clinical Practice Division

2. Clinical Practice Development Committee

The Clinical Practice Development Committee shall identify, unify, and coordinate SIR activities that advance the development of member practices. It shall serve as a forum for identification of important practice issues, for advice, and for solutions to meet practice needs. It shall also proactively identify and prepare for emerging and future trends that may impact member practices.

4. Clinical Practice Development Subcommittee

This subcommittee would address practice management related education, training, and MOC member needs and would interface with the Education and Annual Meeting Divisions.


5. Non-Physician Clinical Staff Subcommittee

This subcommittee would address practice development issues related to the practice team, including NPs, PAs, etc. This group could include members who are NPs, PAs, or others. This subcommittee would interface with the Internal Affairs Division and the Health Policy and Economics Division.


6. Practice Building Subcommittee

This subcommittee would address the practical, "how-to" issues related to building a successful practice, including admitting privileges, credentialing, business development, building product lines, marketing, and setting up an office and would interface with the Communications and Standards Divisions. This group could include a member from the RBMA.


7. Practice Models Subcommittee

This subcommittee would identify and assess the benefit of external and internal sources of business solutions for all models and levels of practice - models such as office, ASCs, IDTF (Independent testing facility), solo, free-standing, IR in a radiology group, alternative models, niche practices (stroke thrombolysis), etc. It would also look at the needs of practitioners at various career levels such as resident/fellow, first or second year, mid-career, etc. SIR Mentors from each practice model would be identified. In addition, a "team" of practice consultants would be identified to whom SIR members could be referred for help in developing a clinical practice or addressing business practice concerns. The subcommittee would also develop informational resources to demonstrate the value of various IR practice models to radiology groups/administrators, radiology chairs, private practice leaders, hospital administration, payers, government regulators, corporations, and pertinent outside organizations: This subcommittee would interface with the Economics, Internal Affairs, and Communications Divisions.


8. Practice Research Subcommittee

This subcommittee would address practice related research questions, identify data that needs to be collected (outcomes, cost-effectiveness, etc.), and encourage participation in clinical trials to support clinical practice. This subcommittee would interface with the new SIR Research Committee and the Communications Division.

Communications Division Committees

9. Newsletter Editorial Board

The Newsletter Editorial Board members contribute articles to IR News, SIR's membership newsletter that primarily serves as a vehicle for communication to and within the membership. This is an opportunity for members to help ensure that items of interest are communicated to the membership. Editorial Board members have the opportunity to become the newsletter Medical Co-Editor or Medical Editor in the future, which involves clearing the copy for medical accuracy.


10. Outreach Subcommittee

The Outreach Subcommittee members assist with collaboration and outreach to pertinent organizations, referring physicians, advise on medical professional outreach strategies, and assist with implementation.


11. PR & Practice Marketing Materials Subcommittee

The PR and Practice Marketing Materials Committee members draft and review web content and other materials, with the Communications Committee Chair having the final clearance authority. They identify materials and actions needed for practice outreach and advise and assist staff with materials development.

12. Healthcare Informatics Advisory Committee

The Healthcare Informatics Advisory Committee is charged with providing oversight of current and future SIR generated data collection activities at the individual practice level as well as developing a comprehensive and in depth needs assessment and logistical analysis of the opportunities and challenges related to the creation of a national multicenter IR data collection, database, and reporting infrastructure.

15. Venous Forum Task Force

The Venous Forum Task Force will provide recommendations to the Executive Council to help guide Society policy and activities with regard to these emerging procedures. Working groups representing professional education, public information, economics, research, and standards will be established to address specific areas.

Education Division Committees

22. CME Committee

This Committee will provide oversight of CME requirements for all SIR continuing medical education programs and materials during SIR's reaccreditation process.

25. Professional Education Committee

Shall support the goal of lifelong learning in interventional radiology by producing relevant self study and reference materials, programs for continuing medical education independent of the Annual Meeting, and alternate CME sources.


26. Publications Advisory Committee

The Publications Advisory Committee serves as the policy-making body with respect to SIR Press publications and serves as an editorial board in acquiring publication ideas and assessing the viability of publication proposals. It is the mission of the Publications Advisory Committee to develop and implement policy, procedures, and practices that advance the creation and dissemination of knowledge and resources which further the education and knowledge base of interventional radiology and support the mission and goals of SIR.


27. Resident Education and Training Committee

The Resident Education & Training Committee shall serve as a resource to the Society on education and training issues related to interventional radiology, including medical students, residents, interventional radiology fellows, and fellowship program directors.


28. SIR Primary Certificate Task Force

To create a certificate in Vascular Interventional Radiology (VIR) without prerequisite certification in Diagnostic Radiology (DR). The training for this certification would combine the skills in imaging, intervention and direct patient care necessary for the practice of VIR without full DR training.

This group was created for members interested in serving as medical student mentors.


31. Women in IR

The mission of this group is: To inspire, encourage and empower women interventional radiologists to achieve their personal and professional goals and to advance our subspecialty. Goals: -To identify, train, and recognize women leaders in Interventional Radiology. -To promote the creativity, flexibility and innovation of our specialty. -To provide a forum for mentoring of women Interventionalists throughout the world. -To promote the highest ideals and standards of ethical behavior. -To create an e-community of women Interventionalists to develop relationships and encourage personal and professional growth.

Health Policy & Economics Division Committees

32. Economics Committee

The Economics Committee monitors and responds to coverage and payment challenges. It develops positions and advocates these positions on such relevant areas as Medicare coverage, facility and physician payment, and managed care reform. The Committee authors model coverage policies on interventional radiology procedures as a resource for local Medicare carriers. The Committee fosters relations with the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and its local Medicare carriers. In addition, the Committee provides educational resources to SIR members including the Interventional Radiology Coding Users' Guide, coding advice, and programs. Application for new members may be submitted thoughout the year. However, new memebers only typically only added in March in conjunction with the Committee meeting held during Annual Meeting.


33. Economics Strategic Planning


34. FDA Committee

The FDA Committee shall develop and maintain a constructive relationship between the Society and the FDA and increase awareness of FDA programs within the Society's membership.


35. Government Affairs Committee

The Committee determines the Society's strategy for government relations and develops and maintains constructive relationships between the Society and the legislative and administrative branches of government. The Committee also conducts the grassroots activities of the Society. In addition, the Committee is accountable for educating SIR members with respect to their regulatory compliance responsibilities.


36. Performance Measures Taskforce

The Performance Measures Subcommittee is charged with developing clinical performance metrics for interventional radiology procedures. The Subcommittee will be a blend of members from economics, standards, and education.

38. JVIR Reviewers

JVIR reviewers assess manuscripts for importance, originality, clarity, validity, adequacy of methods, and publishable quality. Reviewers provide feedback to authors and make recommendations to the JVIR Editor, who makes all final publication decisions. All reviews are conducted using an online submission and review system.

Member Services Division

39. Clinical Associates' Committee

Organize and develop the service base and societal relationship with the growing numbers of licensed independent practitioners involved with IR care.


40. Committee on Membership Applications

The Applications Committee shall review and screen all individuals suggested for membership in accordance with the bylaws to assure that they fulfill the requirements for membership in the appropriate category. Shall consist of no less than three active members in good standing. Shall review and screen all individuals suggested for membership in accordance with the provisions of ARTICLE V of these bylaws to assure that they fulfill the req. for membership.


41. Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee is responsible for ensuring that all members respect and uphold the SIR Code of Ethics and related policies. The Committee shall review and investigate all reports of professional misconduct and ethics violations, including abstract discrepancies, and report its findings to the SIR Executive Council. The Committee will assist with amendments to the SIR Code of Ethics as well as related procedures, policies, and positions statements.


42. Fellows Affairs Committee

The Fellows' Affairs Committee will be called upon to confer in all matters related to the Fellows of the Society. The Fellows' Affairs Committee is a standing committee of SIR. A charge of this Committee is to oversee the Annual Fellows Business Meeting and Dinner program.


43. History Committee

To collect and document information that chronicles the history of interventional radiology and the SIR. This is a subcommittee of the Fellows' Affairs Committee.


44. Membership Development Committee

The Membership Development Committee shall provide strategic direction on recruitment and retention of members. Identify trends and member needs.

46. Rules Committee

The Rules Committee is responsible for the bylaws and may be called upon to interpret bylaws when questions arise. It shall, on order of the executive council, prepare and submit amendments to the bylaws, edit and present to the members any amendments which it deems necessary. It shall receive all resolutions introduced by members; it may record them or combine those having the same intent to prepare them for presentation. It shall present such amendments to the executive council for approval prior to the annual members' business meeting. The Rules Committee is a standing committee of SIR.


47. Volunteers' Committee

The charge of the Volunteers' Committee is to organize, triage, and expand the volunteer member base.

President's Committee(s)

48. Corporate Advisory Council

- Obtain the feedback and advice of industry on SIR's strategies and tactics - Identify and discuss trends and issues concerning interventional radiology that relate to both industry and the Society - Provide specific advice on Society's programs of interest to industry (socioeconomic survey, advertising, sponsorships, etc.) - Provide feedback and ideas to enhance recognition programs for industry


49. Gold Medal Awards Committee

The Gold Medal Awards Committee shall consist of the President as Chair, the Immediate Past President and the Chair of the Fellows Affairs Committee. The Gold Medal Awards Committee will consist of these three individuals, plus two additional individuals appointed by the Committee. The Committee may consider individuals in addition to those nominated by members and fellows of SIR, and shall make not more than two recommendations for Gold Medal Awards to the Executive Council. The Gold Medal can be awarded by the SIR Executive Council to an individual for distinguished and extraordinary service to the SIR or to the discipline of cardiovascular and interventional radiology. Service to interventional radiology can be in teaching, basic research, clinical investigation, or in other areas, such as outstanding contributions in work with the SIR, other medical organizations, governmental agencies or related groups. (Recipients must be determined by late Summer each year in order to meet the Annual Meeting Program deadlines set by the publisher.).

Secretary's Committee

50. Intersociety Advisory Committee

The Intersociety Advisory Committee shall provide recommendations to the Society leadership and committees to help guide intersociety policy and activities. At the direction of the Operations Committee, the Advisory Committee may also implement projects. The Intersociety Advisory Committee will also assist the Executive Committee to develop an overall strategy relating to SIR intersocietal relationships. It will also develop strategic initiatives relating to specific societies and organizations that would help accomplish the global strategy of the SIR. The Committee will also be available to help carry out and implement specific strategic initiatives regarding the SIR global strategy and individual society or organizational initiatives as directed by the EC or Operations Committee.


51. The SIR Advisory Subcommittee on ACR

The SIR Advisory Subcommittee on ACR will provide recommendations and advice to the Society leadership on ACR strategies, collaboration, policies, member involvement, and overall activities. This is a subcommittee of the Intersociety Advisory Committee.


52. The SIR Simulation Committee

The SIR Simulation Committee shall work in collaboration with the CIRSE and RSNA Medical Simulation Task Forces to achieve excellence and safety in interventional radiology patient care by jointly recommending and guiding implementation of a robust infrastructure and process to support IR simulation development, assessment, validation, application, and dissemination. The Committee shall work with the various SIR divisions to implement approved strategic plan goals that are developed jointly or by SIR.

54. Development Committee

Recruits financial resources to support SIR Foundation's research programs and operations.


55. Grant Review Study Section

The Grant Review SubCommittee reviews grant applications and determines the number of additional reviewers that are necessary based on the number of applications. The SubCommittee recruits Grant Review Study Section members based on their areas of expertise that are compatible with the grant application areas of research.


56. Grant Review Sub-Committee

The Grant Review Committee oversees the Foundation's peer review process for grant applications and administers and develops the Foundation's grant programs. - Responsible for the development/revision of grant program guidelines, assignment of grants to reviewers, and review of grant recipient reports and requests. - Recommend funding determinations to the SIR Foundation Board. - Participation in conference calls as needed to discuss program/grant issues.


57. Leadership Gifts Committee

Cultivate and solicit the capital campaign's top individual prospects, generating gift commitments to meet or exceed the goal of the capital campaign.


58. Legs For Life Committee

The Legs For LifeĀ® Committee is responsible for overseeing the SIR Legs For LifeĀ® - National Screening Program for PVD Leg Pain. The Committee assists with the promotion, education, and planning of the program and shall work to ensure that the program continues to fulfill its mission.


59. Research Education Division

The objective of the Research Education Committee is to provide researchers specializing in interventional radiology research with educational opportunities that will improve their understanding of research and thereby increase the number of skilled investigators.


60. Research Policy Division

The Research Policy Committee seeks to collaborate and build relationships with government and other funding agencies in developing programs and tools to further innovative research in interventional radiology. - Conduct Review & make funding recommendations for SIR Foundation Grant programs. - Review the current state of Interventional Radiology Research to identify areas to emphasize in the RFA process of SIR Foundation Grants. - Interact with funding agencies to advance research in Interventional Radiology. - Communicate the advances in and opportunities for research in interventional radiology to SIR membership, SIR BOT, members of the scientific community and the public.

Standards Division Committees

61. Document Endorsement Subcommittee

The Document Endorsement Subcommittee shall review standards and guidelines developed by outside organizations and make recommendations for SIR endorsement of these standards and guidelines. This is a subcommittee of the Standards of Practice Committee.


62. Emerging Technology Subcommittee

Research and development of new techniques and therapies are vital for the continued success of both Interventional Radiology and Medicine as a whole. Dissemination of knowledge of groundbreaking information to potential researchers in interventional radiology is clearly a critical part of this process. Consequently, in 2005 the SIR Operations Committee identified emerging technologies as an important initiative and assigned part of the task of bringing these to the attention of SIR members to the Technology Assessment Committee.


63. Guidelines Revision Subcommittee

The Guidelines Revision Workgroup shall review and update SIR published standards of practice and clinical practice guidelines for interventional procedures as well as joint IR guidelines published with ACR to ensure that they stay current. This is a subcommittee of the Standards of Practice Committee.


64. Pediatrics IR Subcommittee

This is a group charged to develop practice guidelines for pediatric interventions as joint collaborative documents between the Society for Pediatric Radiology and SIR. This new subcommittee will further the Standards Division's goal to develop guidelines more collaboratively. This is a subcommittee of the Standards of Practice Committee.


65. Position Statement Subcommittee

This Subcommittee shall develop society position statements as needed working in collaboration with other pertinent committees when applicable. This is a subcommittee of the Technology Assessment Committee.


66. Safety and Health Committee

The SIR Safety and Health Committee shall serve as a resource to the Society on health and occupational safety issues relevant to interventional radiologists. The Committee shall promote patient and practitioner safety and shall be responsible for addressing all areas of health and safety related to the practice of interventional radiology.

68. Standards of Practice Committee

The Standards of Practice committee shall formally develop standards of practice and clinical practice guidelines for interventional radiology procedures. The Committee shall review standards and guidelines developed by outside organizations and make recommendations for SIR endorsement of these standards and guidelines. The Committee shall also keep the SIR membership informed of standards and guidelines that affect their practice and patients.


69. Technology Assessment Committee

The Technology Assessment Committee shall advise the Society on device matters related to interventional radiology. The Committee shall produce guidelines that ensure that devices used in the practice of interventional radiology are applied safely and appropriately to patients. In addition, the Committee shall ensure that patients have timely access to important new technological advances. The Committee shall also review documents produced by the Standards of Practice Committee.
