It is best to coil proximal and distal to the injury, as the intercostal artery is a ring. That being said,it is not always possible to get into the artery beyond a large pseudoaneurysm, and I have had success doing what you did.
As for agent, I would propose that you consider "embolization" and "ligation" as two seperate but related entities. Embolization is a procedure to take out a distal bed, such as an organ (UFE) or an abnormal structure (AVM). Ligation is simple interruption of an artery or arterial branch. In your case, you wanted to ligate the intercostal artery, and did this percutaneously with coils, rather than surgically with a suture. Particulate agents jepordize the spinal artery and gain you nothing.
