The easy way to catheterise the ipsilateral internal iliac is with a loop, I use a Cobra 2 turned from the other internal iliac but a Sos type works as well. The advantage of a looped Cobra is that is can penetrate further. If there is a clearly visible and accessible bleeding site a microcatheter and a single coil is very effective but if the patient is in bad shape gelfoam slury or a few plugs is usually effective.
After trauma there is usually diffuse bleeding and often it is venous which is why a non-selective approach is usually better. After surgery it is more usual to find a single site as in your case.
The reported cases of sciatic nerve ischaemia were after microfibrillar collagen, gelfoam powder and liquid embolic agents. I am not aware of cases after either coils or gelfoam.
