While I have not had the opportunity to place a covered stent, I have heard through the 'grapevine' that a covered stent can be made by wrapping a WALLSTENT with a bio-occlusive dressing such as a TegaDerm. I would have been tempted to do so in this case.
Is this indeed a viable option in such an emergent case? From your description, this patient was going to die if you couldn't occlude the fistula - so an unorthodox solution would have been acceptable.
