It certainly is uncharted, and it is hard to imagine empanelling a large series of these cases.
I would have done the same as you; the collateral looks big, the situation is acute, and there is little to lose in the short run. (and it seems to have worked.
I have an analagous case in a case of IVC absence that I will post here if I can find a way to get it digitized.
